Gaspar

One of the three wise men of Zeal, keeper of the End of Time.

Gaspar is one of the three wise men from the Kingdom of Zeal, alongside Belthasar and Melchior. His name in the English localization was inspired by Biblical characters, though Masato Kato did not have the Bible in mind when writing the story and was not aware of the names created by translator Ted Woolsey. Gaspar appears in the game as a non-playable character who provides guidance to the party.

Lore & Background

Gaspar is one of the three sages who served the Kingdom of Zeal in 12,000 BC. Along with Belthasar and Melchior, he was a key figure in the kingdom's magical and technological advancements. After the fall of Zeal, Gaspar became stranded at the End of Time, a mysterious location outside the flow of normal time. There, he serves as a guide to Crono and his party, offering advice and information about the nature of time travel and the entity that created the Time Gates. He is depicted as an old sage, matching the description of one of the initial character concepts considered for the playable cast, though that role was ultimately scrapped.

In Their Own Story

At the End of Time, Gaspar waits patiently for travelers who stumble through the Time Gates. He explains that the gates were created by a dying entity who wished Crono and his friends to witness its life throughout time. Gaspar provides the party with the knowledge they need to understand the connections between eras and the true nature of Lavos. He is the one who reveals that the party must defeat Lavos to prevent the apocalypse of 1999 AD. His wisdom helps the heroes piece together the fragmented timeline and find their way to the final confrontation.

Reader's Guide

Gaspar is a non-playable character who resides at the End of Time. He serves as an information source and guide for the party, explaining the mechanics of time travel and the significance of the Time Gates. Players can speak with him to receive hints about where to go next and to learn more about the game's lore. He is one of the three wise men of Zeal, alongside Belthasar and Melchior, all of whom were named after Biblical figures in the English localization by Ted Woolsey. Gaspar's role is primarily expositional, providing context for the party's journey and the nature of the entity that created the Time Gates.
