Magus' Castle

A fortress of dark magic where a fallen sorcerer hides his tragic past.

Magus' Castle is a foreboding fortress of dark magic and sorrow, serving as the personal domain of the enigmatic sorcerer Magus. Located in 600 AD, it stands as the stronghold from which Magus leads the Mystics (known as Fiends in the US/DS port) in their war against humanity. The castle is the final barrier before confronting Magus himself, and its halls are filled with powerful enemies that test the party's combat skills.

Lore & Background

Magus is a powerful sorcerer who leads the Mystics, a race of demons and intelligent animals, in a state of conflict against Guardia in 600 AD. His seclusion conceals a long-lost past: he was formerly known as Janus, the young prince of the Kingdom of Zeal, which was destroyed by Lavos in 12,000 BC. The incident sent him forward through time, and as he ages, he plots revenge against Lavos and broods over the fate of his sister, Schala. The castle serves as his base of operations and a gathering point for his forces.

In Their Own Story

The party arrives in 600 AD to find the kingdom of Guardia in a state of conflict against the Mystics under Magus's leadership. Frog, a former squire once known as Glenn, was turned into an anthropomorphic frog by Magus, who also killed his friend Cyrus. Chivalrous but mired in regret, Frog dedicates his life to protecting Leene, the queen of Guardia, and avenging Cyrus. The castle is the final destination where the party must confront Magus to end the war and uncover the truth behind his actions.

Reader's Guide

Magus' Castle is a critical dungeon in the game's narrative, representing the climax of the heroes' journey through 600 AD. It serves as the final obstacle before confronting Magus directly and uncovering his true identity. Players must navigate treacherous corridors filled with powerful enemies that test their combat skills and strategic planning. The dungeon matters because it forces the party to confront the antagonist's motivations and leads to the revelation of Magus's connection to the Kingdom of Zeal and Lavos.
